Cushion Sizes Australia: A Complete Guide
Choosing the right cushion size is one of the most overlooked decisions in home styling. Too small and cushions look lost on a sofa; too large and they overwhelm the seat. And here's the thing most people don't realise: the larger the cushion, the more luxurious the feeling. A generously sized cushion has more presence, more weight, and makes a sofa feel intentionally styled rather than an afterthought. This guide walks you through standard Australian cushion sizes, how many to use on different sofas and beds, and how to layer sizes for the best effect.
Standard Cushion Sizes in Australia
| Size | Shape | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 40 × 40 cm | Square | Armchairs, accent layering |
| 45 × 45 cm | Square | Standard sofas, single beds |
| 50 × 50 cm | Square | Sofas, beds, general use |
| 55 × 55 cm | Square | Sofas, queen & king beds — generous, luxurious feel |
| 60 × 60 cm | Square | Large sofas, floor cushions |
| 30 × 50 cm | Rectangular | Lumbar support, layering |
| 55 × 35 cm | Rectangular | Lumbar layering in front of larger square cushions |
| 40 × 60 cm | Rectangular | Large sofas, end of bed |
At 55 × 55 cm, Agasti cushions sit between the standard 50cm and 60cm sizes. This is the sweet spot — big enough to feel genuinely luxurious on a sofa or bed, without tipping into oversized floor-cushion territory.
Agasti Cushion Sizes
We offer two sizes designed to work together:
- 55 × 55 cm — our core size. Works on two, three and four-seat sofas, queen and king beds, and armchairs. The larger format gives cushions a weightier, more considered presence than a standard 45 or 50cm.
- 55 × 35 cm — a rectangular lumbar cushion. Layer one in front of your 55 × 55 cm cushions for a styled, considered look.

Mixing Prints and Colours
Agasti cushions are designed to layer. A few principles that always work:
- Odd numbers look more natural. Three cushions on a sofa almost always looks better than two or four.
- Vary the texture, keep the palette. Mix our embroidered and block-printed covers — the craft is different but the colour story ties them together.
- Let one print lead. Pick a bolder print as the hero and use a quieter companion print behind or in front of it.
Cushion Insert Sizing
Agasti sells cushion covers only. When choosing an insert:
- For a tailored flat look: match the insert exactly — a 55 × 55 cm cover gets a 55 × 55 cm insert.
- For a full plump look: go 2 – 5 cm larger than the cover — a 55 × 55 cm cover gets a 57 – 60 cm insert. This prevents sagging corners and gives the cushion a more luxurious feel.
- Never go smaller than the cover — it will look deflated and unsupported.
