Australian Bed Size Guide: Quilt Overhang Explained

One of the most common questions we get: will this quilt fit my bed? And more importantly — how much will it drape? A quilt that barely reaches the mattress edge looks completely different from one with a generous overhang that folds to the floor. This guide covers standard Australian bed dimensions and shows exactly how our Indian block-printed quilts look on each.

Understanding Quilt Overhang

Overhang is how far the quilt extends beyond the mattress edge on each side and at the foot. Getting this right changes the entire look of your bed.

• Minimal (10-20 cm per side): Clean, tailored look. Quilt sits mostly on top of the mattress.
• Moderate (25-40 cm per side): The classic look - drapes to roughly mid-way down the bed base.
• Generous (40+ cm per side): Luxurious and floor-grazing on platform and low-profile beds.

At the foot of the bed, 30-55 cm is ideal - enough to fold the quilt back and show the design, or tuck neatly under the mattress.

Each diagram shows a top-down view. The lighter surround is the quilt overhang; the darker rectangle is the mattress. On the Double, the shaded band at the top shows the quilt folded back near the pillows — the classic luxury hotel turndown that shows off the reverse print.
